Ear candling was used by many ancient civilisations including the Aztecs, Romans, Greeks Egyptians & Aborigines. The Egyptians used reeds from the river Nile; they coated them with wax, placed them in the ear canal, & packed mud around to form a seal. Hollow twigs or cones made from glazed clay were also used to carry herbs & incense into the ears. It is believed that ear candling was used not only to cleanse the ear canal but for spiritual purification. In many parts of the world these traditional practices faded out, however, in America some members of the native Hopi Indian tribe kept the ear candling tradition alive. The Hopi candles we use today are named after this tribe who first introduced this therapy to the west. The ear candles use heat, smoke and herbs, which all are known to have healing qualities.

What happens during a treatment
A detailed history will be taken to ensure the treatment is suitable for you, any medication you are taking will be recorded.
The treatments includes a shoulder, neck & face massage so you will be asked to remove your jumper/shirt/t-shirt. You will be covered with a towel to protect your modesty.
You will be asked to lay on a treatment couch on your side, an ear candle will be gently inserted into the ear canal to check for comfort. It will then be removed lit & replaced into the ear canal. Your therapist will place a piece of cloth over you hair & face to protect it from any falling debris from the candle. When the candle has burnt down it will be removed & extinguished. You will be asked to turn over on to the other side so the proceedure can be carried out on the other ear. When treatment on the other ear is complete you will be asked to lay on your back so the final part of the treatment can take place, this is the massage. The facial massage encourages further drainage of the sinuses, increases blood & lymph circulation which will assist in the removal of waste & toxins from the treatment area. Massage also soothes the nervous system inducing deep relaxation.
After your treatment you will be able to ask your therapist any questions you may have. You will be given an aftercare sheet which offers advice on how to gain maximum benefit from your treatment.
