Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a relatively modern term although the use of essential oils dates back to the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. It wasn't until the 13th century that essential oils reached our shores. Many who used aromatic oils during the plague were said to have survived because of the antiseptic properties the oils posess.

During the 1920's the French chemist, Gattefosse, discovered that essential oils can reach the organs of the body because the skin is able to absorb them. They are then transported throughout the body in the circulatory system, the essential oils cause chemical changes in the body and these changes have a physical effect on the body's systems.

Aromatherapy works in two ways, physically, through direct absorption by the skin, and psychologically when the fragrance is inhaled.

What happens during an aromatherapy treatment

A detailed medical history will be taken & any medication you are taking will be recorded. A treatment plan will be devised, your therapist will then create a blend of essential oils suited to your individual physical & emotional needs, these will then be diluted in a suitable carrier oil. The oils will be applied in a soothing massage, you will be encouraged to breath deeply to obtain maximum benefit from the oils.

After your treatment

You will have the opportunity to discuss with your therapist any questions you may have. She may also suggest ways in which you can enhance your treatments at home, she may recommend some essential oils to use in the bath or a room fragrancer. You will be given an aftercare sheet to take home with you, this advises you how to get maximum benefit from your treatment

N.B It is always wise to remember if you use essential oils at home that they are highly concentrated & can be dangerous. All essential oils should be stored in a cool dark place out of the reach of children.
